13 New Year's Resolutions Every Marketer Should Make in 2013

The new year is the perfect time to kick your professional butt into gear. Whether you are a devoted resolution-maker or just want to know how you can be a better marketer, here are 13 changes every marketing professional should make in 2013.

1. Let go. Trying to do everything can be destructive to your team's efficiency and work flow. For example, just about everyone likes to contribute creative ideas to a content brainstorm. However, too many ideas increases the time it takes to narrow it down to one. Plus, not everyone is good at coming up with creative ideas. Some are best at coming up with the ideas, but may lack the focus to make it executable. Others might suck at coming up with the initial idea, but are exceptional at tailoring it to be truly epic.
Be honest about your capabilities and learn to let others take the reins when appropriate. It will allow you time to focus on what you are best at, contributing to a project in the most effective way possible.

Facebook Real Name Policy Challenged by German Privacy Watchdog

Image representing Facebook as depicted in Cru...

A German privacy watchdog has ordered Facebook (Nasdaq: FB) to stop enforcing its policy making users register their real names as a prerequisite to setting up accounts. While the Menlo Park, Calif.-based social media company began vigorously enforcing its real name policy this fall in the wake of a revelation that some 83 million user accounts were fake, the Independent Center for Privacy Protection (ULD) said that policy is “unacceptable” in a statement issued Monday.

The ULD demanded that Facebook begin allowing members to user pseudonyms for their social media profiles, saying the requirement violates German privacy laws and grants no benefit to consumers.
"It is unacceptable that a U.S. portal like Facebook violates German data protection law unopposed and with no prospect of an end," Thilo Weichert, the national privacy commissioner and head of the ULD, said in Monday’s statement. "The aim of the orders of ULD is to finally bring about a legal clarification of who is responsible for Facebook and to what this company is bound to."

Facebook promised to “fight” the charge “vigorously” in a statement emailed to the press, saying of the ULD that “the orders are without merit and a waste of German taxpayers' money.”
“It is the role of individual services to determine their own policies about anonymity within the governing law -- for Facebook Ireland European data protection and Irish law,” Facebook’s statement added.
The ULD is challenging Facebook’s real name policy on behalf of the northernmost German state of Schleswig-Holstein, which according to IT World means that the order could only be enforced in that region, whose capital is Kiel.

Weichert, however, argued that other German data-protection agencies would follow Schleswig-Holstein's lead in establishing a new legal precedent for Facebook.

“Actually, this should be in the interest of the company too,” Weichert said. “We hope for a fact-based debate not aimed at delaying action. In view of the fact that Facebook currently is taking the opportunity from all its members to decide themselves about their own discoverability under their name, our initiative is more urgent than ever.”

Facebook now has two weeks to contest the order in court.
Interestingly enough, another German state took a markedly different stance on social media transparency last October when police requested that Twitter remove an account affiliated with a neo-Nazi organization. The proliferation of pseudonymous social media accounts could create new problems for German police hoping to regulate hate speech.

Facebook shares rose around one percent during trading Tuesday, reaching $27.91 in late afternoon trading.

HTML Code & Search Engine Ranking Factors

Image representing Search Engine Land as depic...
Image via CrunchBase
HTML is the underlying code used to create web pages. Search engines can pick up ranking signals from specific HTML elements. Below, some of the most important HTML tags you should pay attention to.

Ht: HTML Title Tag

Imagine that you wrote 100 different books but gave them all the same exact title. How would anyone understand that they are all about different topics?
Imagine that you wrote 100 different books, and while they did have different titles, they weren’t very descriptive — maybe just a single word or two. Again, how would anyone know at a glance what the books are about.
HTML titles have always been and remain the most important HTML signal that search engines use to understand what a page is about. Bad titles on your pages are like having bad book titles in the examples above.
Think about what you hope each page will be found for, especially relying on your keyword research. Then craft unique, descriptive titles for each of your pages. For more help about this, see our tutorial below:

Hd: The Meta Description Tag

One of the oldest supported HTML elements, the meta description tag allows you to suggest how you’d like your pages to be described in search listings.
SEO purists will argue that the meta description tag isn’t a “ranking factor,” in that it doesn’t actually help your pages get a boost to the top. Rather, it’s a “display factor,” something that helps how you look if you appear in the top results because of other factors.
Technically, that’s correct. Yet, as search engines are looking at things like engagement, whether your listing even attracts a click is a ranking factor. A good description can increase the odds of that click. So we feel the meta description tag should be counted as a ranking factor.
Having a meta description tag doesn’t guarantee that your description will actually get used. Search engines may create different descriptions based on what they decide is most relevant for the particular query that a listing is shown for. But it increases the odds that what you prefer will appear. It’s easy to do. So do it.
Below, Search Engine Land articles that take a closer look at the meta description tag:

Hh: Header Tags

See the headline up at the top of this page? Behind the scenes, HTML code is used to make that a header tag, an H1 tag in particular.
See the sub-headlines on the page? Those also use header tags. Each of them is the next “level” down, using H2 tags.
Header tags are a formal way to identify key sections of a web page. Search engines have long used them as clues to what a page is about. If the words you want to be found for are in header tags, you might have a slightly increased chance of appearing in searches for those words.
Naturally, talk of header tag “boosts” has caused some people to go overboard. They’ll put entire paragraphs in header tags. That doesn’t help.
Header tags are useful when they reflect some logical structure to a page. If you have a main headline, using an H1 tag makes sense. Subheads in H2 make sense. Use headers as they make sense, and they may reinforce some of your other ranking factors. Don’t use them, and that’s OK. They’re a minor factor, anyway.
For more about headers, see our articles below:

LONDON, UK – August 23, 2012 – Sony Mobile Communications AB (“Sony Mobile”) today announced that it is altering the global operational structure of its development sites in Tokyo, Japan, Lund, Sweden and Beijing, China. In October 2012, Sony Mobile will move its corporate headquarters and certain other functions from Lund, Sweden, to Tokyo, Japan. Sony Mobile has also redefined the roles and responsibilities of each major development site to leverage the strengths of each respective site. These measures aim to enhance operational and development capabilities of Sony Mobile such as time to market efficiency, streamline supply chain management and drive greater integration with the wider Sony group.

In relation to the operational structure changes, Sony Mobile plans to reduce its global headcount by approximately 15 percent (approximately 1000 personnel, including consultants) throughout the financial years of 2012 and 2013 (i.e. by the end of March 2014) as the company seeks to increase operational efficiency, reduce costs and drive profitable growth.
Today Sony Mobile filed a redundancy notification (“varsel”) with the Swedish authorities to notify them that the company expects around 650 employees across a number of functions at Sony Mobile in Lund to be affected by job closures. The remaining headcount reductions will be primarily consultants in Sweden. Lund will continue to be an important strategic site for Sony Mobile, with the main focus on software and application development.

Facebook And Snapchat Go Toe To Toe: Why It’s Good For Both Companies

Facebook is building a standalone app to compete with the red-hot impermanent photo messaging app Snapchat, as reported by AllThingsD’s Mike Isaac late last night.
Facebook plans to launch its app by the end of the year; the app will function very similarly to Snapchat, in which users take pictures or videos (up to 10 seconds long) and “snap” them to friends, found via their cellphone number, Facebook account if connected, or Snapchat username. The recipient can then view the snap for 1-10 seconds, set by the sender, after they open it.
It isn’t clear yet if the initial Facebook version will include video.

Why It’s Good For Facebook

It’s no secret that Facebook wants to be aggressive in mobile and considers pictures to be the core part of its service. When I think mobile and photo, Instagram and Snapchat immediately come to mind.
It would be stupid for Facebook to not try to enter this space, as Snapchat, a company of five people that is less than a year old, now sees 50 million photos shared every day.
However, I think Facebook will struggle mightily to make a major splash in impermanent data. While it has the largest social graph in the world, there have been privacy concerns with Facebook since its inception.
My generation, the core group of Snapchat users and now at the original demographic age for Facebook, has grown up using and fearing Facebook. Unlike the original adopters (looking at you, Josh), we started using Facebook in high school, and thus had to worry that the pictures and statuses we posted would come back to bite us in college admissions and job interviews.
And now, we’re expected to switch from Snapchat to sharing our most private pictures on Facebook? I just don’t see that happening. Snapchat has explained publicly that it never stores photos on its servers—we aren’t sure yet how Facebook will process the images.

Why Snapchat Benefits

Mike Isaac explains how the Facebook app will work:
“Facebook’s competing app will do much the same thing. After users open the new app, they are presented with a list of current message threads between them and their friends. Hold a finger down on one of the threads, and a timer comes up to ask how long the message should be viewable. From there, users are able to send the message — which, just like on Snapchat, will only be viewable for a fixed period of time.”
Except that’s not really the same thing. Snapchat doesn’t have a “list of current message threads” because it’s all about instantaneous communication and capturing moments. That’s why Snapchat users are so highly engaged—because you receive a picture, open it, and immediately snap one back. You don’t go back and re-read or save the conversations.
The competition will be substantial for Snapchat, which has legitimate concerns today. Snapchat users complained very loudly in app store reviews and on social media after many had problems with the Snapchat video update on Friday. And the company has struggled to drop its scandalous sexting reputation, which could expose it to lawsuits as a significant portion of its core users are minors. Facebook, with a more wholesome reputation and greater engineering power, could capitalize on that.
More than anything, though, the Facebook competition helps Snapchat because it gives them a great deal of credibility and visibility. Snapchat got its first press in a long New Yorker article on Stanford last year, has been covered fairly frequently since then, and is raising a substantial Series A funding round.
And yet, it’s still struggled to be considered as more than a sexting app or a toy for high school and college kids. A Facebook competitor changes that. It should help push the conversation away from nudity and towards more comparisons with Instagram—a positive for a small, young company that’s raising funds, hiring Stanford engineers, and attracting users.

Who Wins?

Facebook has to choose between two paths: adjust its course and fight Snapchat directly, or use the app as a popular feature within Messenger.
If it really does want to face Snapchat head on, it needs to drop the Facebook login requirement, which it did for Facebook Messenger to compete with WhatsApp, and try to build a better product than Snapchat. Many users love how quickly Snapchat loads and grabs pictures and video (much faster than the iOS camera and Facebook camera apps for me)–that’s where Facebook should focus first.
A more savvy approach might be to aim for a different demographic, rolling the Snapchat clone back into the Facebook messenger app, allowing you the option to send normal Facebook messages or snaps from your phone. The added dimension to messaging would drive engagement within Facebook’s apps, allowing Facebook and Snapchat to coexist in a growing market.

Google Fixes the Fat Finger Problem With Mobile Ads

Image representing Google as depicted in Crunc...

Google just offered up a solution to one of the bigger complaints with mobile ads -- the fat finger problem.

The search giant implemented a new feature Thursday called "confirmed clicks" for all in-app banner ads on smartphones in an effort to crack down on the number of accidental clicks on mobile.

Starting today, when users tap on the outer edge of one of these mobile ads, a tab will appear at the bottom

of the screen prompting them to "Visit Site." Users will need to tap on this tab to verify that they do want to be re-directed to a new site by the ad.
"We find that most accidental clicks on in-app image ads happen at the outer edge of the ad unit, likely when you’re trying to click or scroll to nearby content," Allen Huang, Google's product manager for mobile display ads, wrote in a blog post announcing the change. "Now if you click on the outer border of the ad, we’ll prompt you to verify that you actually meant to click on the ad to learn more."

Many analysts and advertisers have suggested that mobile click-through rates are exaggerated by the fact that smartphone screens are smaller and therefore make it more likely users will accidentally tap on an ad. By implementing a kind of two-step verification process for mobile ads, Google may be able to improve the user experience and alleviate the concerns of advertisers.

"As devices continue to converge there will be new challenges in the fight against what many have called the ‘fat finger’ problem," Huang wrote. "But implementing confirmed clicks is an important step that we think will benefit users, advertisers, publishers, and the mobile ecosystem overall, and we’ll continue to look for ways to improve mobile ads for everyone."

WordPress.com Enterprise Offers Managed Hosting for Businesses

Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, announced its WordPress.com Enterprise service Thursday as an option for customers who have outgrown the capabilities of WordPress.com's services but don't need the extra features and expense of WordPress VIP.
It used to be easy to tell the difference between self-hosted WordPress accounts and WordPress.com. WordPress.com was the free, hosted option that offered users a fast, easy way to blog but limited what plugins or design changes a user could make to her site.
Over the years, Automattic has added additional WordPress.com upgrades, letting users remove advertisements from their sites, upload and embed video and better customize the look and feel of the site. At the same time, WordPress has offered its WordPress VIP service for publishers and large content creators. WordPress VIP starts at $3,750 a month -- not including setup fees -- and is used by clients such as The New York Observer and CNN.
At $500 a month, WordPress.com Enterprise is a middle option for customers that need a managed WordPress host but don't need the full weight of WordPress VIP. WordPress.com Enterprise users get unlimited traffic, bandwidth and storage and WordPress.com's VideoPress service is included.
As with WordPress VIP, WordPress.com Enterprise customers get access to a subset of approved WordPress plugins and access to custom and premium designs. WordPress.com Enterprise users can't make PHP customizations but they are allowed to make changes to the structure of the site using JavaScript.

Can WordPress.com Play in the Managed Hosting Space?

The managed hosting space is white-hot. In addition to traditional hosts such as Rackspace and MediaTemple, a number of WordPress-specific managed hosts have started to emerge. In the last 18 months alone, we've seen WPEngine, Page.ly and Synthesis enter the space.
The challenge Automattic will have with WordPress.com Enterprise is that $500 a month is more expensive than most managed hosts -- even with the level of support Automattic says its offering.
I asked Raanan Bar-Cohen, Automattic's VP of media services why a customer should choose WordPress.com Enterprise versus some of the options that can cost several hundred dollars a month less.
He told me,
"With WordPress.com Enterprise you get the best of all worlds and the ability to launch immediately. Enterprise customers receive all the built-in features of WordPress.com, all the premium features of WordPress.com (meaning all paid upgrades and unlimited premium themes), as well as all the amazing built-in features of WordPress.com VIP‚ such as integration with Chartbeat, Flipboard, one-click activation of workflow plugins and more."
That's not really an answer -- especially as many other managed hosts also have close integration with other plugins and services. Still, it's clear Automattic feels that its product is good enough to be worth the extra cost.
Beyond just other WordPress managed hosts, WordPress.com Enterprise also has competition on the low end. Companies such as Squarespace and Tumblr are increasingly used by big brands and companies to create less intricate sites.
Looking at some of the clients hosted on WordPress.com Enterprise, I couldn't help but wonder how many of them would be just fine using Squarespace, which is 1/30th the price -- or even Tumblr.

An Automattic Evolution

Over the last few years, we've watched Automattic evolve from a free, hosted version of WordPress.com into a more focused software-as-a-service platform company. Last month, the company introduced a specific vertical for restaurants to host their sites and, on the high end, it continues to offer VIP support and secure site backups.
This makes a lot of sense because when it comes to the free hosted website space, WordPress.com is trailing Tumblr in the hearts and minds of the public. WordPress -- either self-hosted or .com -- powers more than 17% of the web, however, WordPress.com has fallen far behind Tumblr in terms of number of blogs and pageviews.
It will be interesting to see if the company can make a transition into the mid-level managed hosting space with WordPress.com Enterprise.
Would you consider using WordPress.com Enterprise for your brand or business? Let us know in the comments.

How PRWeb Helps Distribute Crap Into Google & News Sites

“What’s the use of PRWeb?,” tweeted Megan McCarthy of Reuters, trying to digest how that service ended up circulating a fake Google acquisition story. Come along, Megan and others, and I’ll explain one of the sorriest uses, getting crap into Google News and out into news sites.
For those who somehow missed today’s big tech news, PRWeb ran a press release saying that WiFi provider ICOA was being acquired by Google for $400 million. Plenty of outlets carried the news, until denials from both parties started circulating. Instead, the release appears to have been written by someone trying to pump up ICOA’s stock.
It’s a big embarrassment for PRWeb, which has now issued its own statement on the matter:
PRWeb transmitted a press release for ICOA that we have since learned was fraudulent. The release was not issued or authorized by ICOA. Vocus reviews all press releases and follows an internal process designed to maintain the integrity of the releases we send out every day. Even with reasonable safeguards identity theft occurs, on occasion, across all of the major wire services. We have removed the fraudulent release and turned the matter over to the proper authorities for further investigation.
Others will delve into what Vocus — the company that owns PRWeb — does to supposedly ensure that someone who says they’re posting news on behalf of a company really is representing that company. I’m going to focus instead on the idea that PRWeb is apparently reviewing all press releases to ensure the “integrity” of them. That will help explain why, in this day when any company can instantly issues press releases, a service like PRWeb still exists.

This Is Integrity?

It’s all about distribution. In the past, you’d get a press release out and hope newspapers might pick up the story, often using the release as a basis for writing their own stories — ones that might be fact-checked, or sourced with others, or get turned into something other than a promotional item.
Instead, with PRWeb and other services, you can get whatever you want published and distributed verbatim into a wide range of news sources. To illustrate this, let’s start with some published press releases that should all have the required integrity promised by PRWeb.
We’ll begin with a search for releases on the important news topic of viagra:
I’m going to focus on the third release listed, one headlined, “How to Buy Drugs – Lowest Price Viagra, Buy Levitra Viagra – Online Pill Store,” as you can see below:
There’s so much to love in this release. My favorite part is probably the pullout quote, “Levitra Buy Viagra.” But also, apparently the online pharmacy is both “trustworthy” and able to sell prescription drugs without customers needing a prescription. I guess that’s because it’s a “licensed and legal European” pharmacy, which is pretty clear given that big American flag and “American quality” logo in the press release image, along with a Canadian maple leaf and the words “Canadian Online Pharmacy.”
I have no reason to doubt all of this, to doubt the claims at all, because as you can see from the PRWeb statement, this release was reviewed to ensure it had the right “integrity” that PRWeb apparently feels it needs to maintain with its service.

Distribution Time!

Once the release was posted, it was then distributed to a range of outlets that PRWeb helpfully itemizes, including Google News and, if you paid extra, through the Associated Press and thus to news outlets like the New York Times to The Oregonian:

As it turns out, the Viagra release above didn’t make it into Google News, perhaps because only the “Standard” package of $159 was purchased. Google News and news search engines seem to require going up to the “Advanced” package for $199.

Injecting Integrity Into Google News

That’s OK, we can see how even a release that isn’t directly distributed on PRWeb to Google News can still pollute it, in the “how to buy viagra” search below in Google News:

All those sites marked “Hacked” are Google News sources where some or all of the entire article that Google News saw, when it visited the site, was completely different than what the actual article was about. If you’re wondering why Google’s “Penguin” spam fighting update hasn’t caught this, the answer is likely two-fold:
  • Penguin is applied to Google Web Search, rather than Google News
  • Google News is radically screwed-up
There’s an entire separate article we’ll get to eventually on how the relevancy of Google News seems to have gotten worse recently, with stories being surfaced that can be woefully out-of-date. The fact that all these hacked sites are showing up is just one sign that perhaps Google News needs more attention than it has been getting from Google.
Postscript: Technically, the Penguin update was aimed at fighting spam, not hacking attempts. That’s a bigger reason why Penguin isn’t having an impact on the hacking within Google News. But then again, the people hacking these web sites are doing so with the intent of spamming Google’s results. So, I still count it as a disappointment that you see so much of this happening.

Injecting Integrity Into News Publishers

But let’s move on to that “News Publisher” item. That, supposedly, is a story from the Houston Chronicle called “Levitra Buy Viagra.” It was indeed published by the Houston Chronicle, and it was a legit story in the sense that the paper wasn’t hacked. Rather, it’s a PRWeb distributor:

It looks to be exactly the same press release, from the same company, that I mentioned above. I haven’t done a word-by-word match, but at the very least, it’s virtually identical. Oh, there is one difference. This release was published at the end of October, rather than the end of November. I guess there was that much change with the company that it made sense to issue the same release again just a month later.
Try doing searches for “lowest price viagra” or “online pill stores,” and you can see similar things to what I’ve described above happening.
“But wait,” I hear you say, “No one searches for such things in Google News!” Maybe. Maybe not. But they search for many other things, both in Google News and in Google, where news results may appear. Say, for example, “vitamin injections,” which generates these results on Google News:

Plenty of news coverage on the topic from the San Francisco Chronicle. Er, make that from the San Francisco Chronicle running PRWeb press releases.

Injecting Integrity Into Bing & Yahoo

It’s not just Google, of course, that gets infected by this madness. Here’s the same search, this time at Bing:

Bless, at least Bing gives me an actual news story up top, sadly from the Daily Mail, but this is Daily Mail fare. But after that, it’s PRweb distribution taking over. I particularly like the stories tagged as being from Yahoo. This is a PRWeb twofer win!
You see, the PRWeb “stories” on vitamin injections got distributed to Yahoo (here’s one of them), where they became available to those searching on Yahoo News. But in turn, they also became fodder that Bing News carried.

The Legit Way To Buy Links

I haven’t even gotten into the other aspect of why people buy on PRWeb, which is to get links. Links are still an important ranking factor for search engines. Buying a press release through PRWeb is an easy and legit way to effectively buy links, a way that Google doesn’t penalize you for.
Postscript: Doing a little more digging, it appears that the head of Google’s web spam team, Matt Cutts, specifically said way back in 2005 that links from PRweb don’t carry credit. Of course, there are plenty of people who might assume they still do. It’s not like there’s any easy-to-spot notice informing people that Google discounts these links. And the “Advanced Package” that PRweb pitches as being “search-optimized” has “anchor text links” as a selling point.

Fake News About Google In Google

By the way, today’s fake press release that Google had to deny ironically got visibility through Google itself. That fake release generated stories that assumed it was true, and around 12:15pm ET today, when the denial stories were picking up, Google was still giving visibility to the incorrect stories:

Bing, on the other hand, got it right with the denial stories showing up.

Will 2013 Bring A Paid Link Resurgence?

With Google rolling out frequent changes, the last couple of years have been alternately amazingly fun and freakishly terrifying for anyone who builds links or has links built.
It should be clear by now that your site can be harmed by poor quality links, whether you bought them or got them for free, or heck, didn’t even intentionally get them. I previously stated (in several places) that I thought negative SEO was more of a scare tactic than a reality but I’ve since changed my mind after witnessing it firsthand a few times.
As much as some people like to think that links aren’t as important as link builders make them out to be, they’re still one of the easiest ways to cause harm to a site even if they’re no longer the easiest way to rank one.
Puppet Penguin

Google Adjusts Webmaster Guidelines; Panic Ensues

With Google’s updated Webmaster Guidelines for link schemes  I’m starting to think that paid links aren’t actually going away anytime soon as some are predicting.
Any optimization is an effort to manipulate the quality of Google’s search results, correct? I mean, why else would you bother? You want your site to have better visibility, and you aren’t going to leave that up to Google. These “link schemes” worry me because it’s not just paid links that are being fussed about now, it’s manipulative links, poor quality links, crappy directory links. It’s all links, basically.
If this is true, will people start to buy more links? I think they might. And yes, this is my version of “Predictions for 2013″ in an informal manner. And yes again, I don’t have huge issues with paid links, but I’m not suggesting that anyone should go that route; I am merely explaining why I think they might.

The Problem With Free

Lots of us used to think that any link was a good link provided it was free, but that isn’t the case anymore. I’ve looked at a few sites that were warned and penalized, sites that have cleaned up all their paid links (or never actually had any paid links), asked for reconsideration, and been denied because they still show unnatural links.
The common theme here is that these remaining “unnatural” links aren’t paid links. They just happen to be on sites that have little to no value. Maybe they once did, but they no longer do.

The Need To Control

Think about this: if you’re no longer going to get away with placing low-value links, you’ll either agree that content is king and work that angle or you’ll try and control the whole process on your own. Controlling any marketing process tends to cost money.
With people now charging to take an existing link down, I can’t see the payment bit of things simmering down completely, as webmasters now stand to make money off placing links, keeping them up, and removing them when they can make money. If there’s any money to be made, webmasters will usually find a way to charge.
And this: when sites have done everything the right way yet still have problems with every Google update, what does that tell us? Some sites may be sensitive, but when it’s your business on the line and you’re trying to do things the right way but it’s not paying off, what are you going to do? Sit and wait and hope it will all work out in the end, or pay for action?
Please note that by saying that, I’m not advocating that anyone buys links. I’m simply bringing up potential issues as Google attempts to subvert a process that continually evolves. I’ve talked to many site owners who say that they want to do things the “right” way but they don’t really think that they can, as they will keep losing ground to competitors who don’t have a problem with overt violations.

What New Ways Of Manipulation Will This Bring?

I’ve looked at link profiles that are full of good paid links and they are ten times better than some profiles filled with nothing but free ones. If the theory holds that we’re moving towards a more semantic web, then anchor text won’t matter as much which means that people will find other things to manipulate and instead of just buying links, they’ll potentially be buying authors. They’ll be buying content surrounding links they already have. They will develop new ways of rising about competitors by buying negative sentiments where their competitors have links.
Google’s constant attempts to crack down serve only to spawn new and harder-to-catch ways to win. It sounds harsh but I know that no matter what methods they develop of controlling manipulation in one form, people will find ways to manipulate something else, until that gets smacked too, and they start over again.
People like to think that any paid link will stand out, but you probably encounter paid links every day and you have no idea that they haven’t been editorially given. As Danny Sullivan pointed out recently, you can buy press releases that contain links but Google doesn’t yet penalize these. He goes on to say that they apparently don’t carry any weight, just like a paid no-followed link, but my point is that you cannot always identify a paid link without doing some digging.
There are definitely some stupid link buyers out there of course, but there are some incredibly clever ones as well.
At the very least, 2013 should be a very interesting year for link building.
